I have decided that I am going to go out and get some spiffy new technology. But I wanted to know which GPS systems you recommend. I want to be able to download the route to my computer. (Don't worry 3.5, I won't be able to compete with your wonderful, eye-in-the-sky, dual doppler, team coverage reporting)
Any models I should look for/stay away from? And where is the best place to find one at a reasonable price?

So (in my best 3.5 immo taunting caricature), you really think you're ready to run with the GPS wunderkinds, huh ? think so ? punk ? The ones we use at the hash (the wrist watch style ones) are the Garmin Forerunner. They are currently selling 2 models, the 201, which is kind of basic and does pretty much everything you'd want (tells you your current or average pace in either min/mile or mile/hour, lat/lon, simple maps of your trail, compass heading, altitude, etc). The 301 adds on heart monitor (which you also have to use the chest strap that comes with it). A few of us have the 201, and I think 3and1/2 is the only one who has the 301. I would say target.com probably has the best price. Both will let you attach it to your computer to upload your running data and comes with a free logbook program that gives you a complete log of all your runs. And for each individual run it will let you view a simple map and 30 second intervals of pace, distance, etc. You can also download an XML file of your runs that shows lat/lon etc and can be used at this website www.gpsvisualizer.com/map?form=forerunner to map your run onto some really good google type maps Don't have much info on the other types of GPS's but I think Garmin has the most variety of them with varying capabilities. Some of the handheld ones allow you to download maps and waypoints to them from various sources, not sure if I would personally ever need these features, but I guess some do

Thanks for the quick response.
I'm ready. But are you ready for me to join the ranks of the GPS wunderkinds? Well, are ya? That's the real question.
And of course seven halves would have the latest and greatest model. I wouldn't expect anything less of him.

Darn right I've got the newest model. Mine even uses USB 2.0.
But I started off with the Timex version. Timex has a system with a watch, HRM, GPS reciever, and data recorder. Each of those is a separate unit. So I was wearing a nice light watch, but I had a box about the size of a garage door opener strapped to my arm to receive GPS signals and transmit them to the watch. You can add on another box to receive signals from your HRM strap and transmit those to the watch, and yet another box to receive signals from the HRM and GPS and record them for later.
I found I would rather wear something a little larger on my wrist, and not have to wear all of those other boxes.
If I remember right, I saw the Forerunner 201 at Target for $99 over Christmas.

hopefully they still have it for that price.
Although I might need to request that the continuing fourteen fourths education series dedicate a class the the usage of a GPS unit.

I went to Target last night after class and the only model they carry is the Forerunner 101 which doesn't appear to have the computer hook-up. So it looks like I may have to just order it online.

So after all this, I went to go order from the site Climaxes recommended (thanks!) and I see that a newer spiffier model is coming out at the end of this month. www.lakepowelldiscountmarineelectronics.com/gafo205gpswa.htmlSo, I think I will just wait for that to come out and get that. I like the idea of having the usb connection as opposed to the serial, and don't need any heart rate monitor.
