In our continuing edumication series we discuss how to post a picture with a thumbnail. First, you need a thumbnail. A thumbnail is just a small version of an image, so a view can see what the image looks like without downloading it through his pathetic 14.4 kbps dialup connection. I make my thumbnails with STG Thumb. If you just have a couple you can use Windows Paint to scale down your image. Or if you're a Photoshop stud you probably already know how. Whatever. Just assume you got your thumbnail somewhere. We'll assume that my thumbnail is at www.davewilson.cc/Hash/2006Hashes/Hash010706/sm_Image(944).jpg, and the actual image is at www.davewilson.cc/Hash/2006Hashes/Hash010706/Image(944).jpg. Note that the only difference in the URLs is that the thumbnail starts with sm_. That's how I label my thumbnails. So you need to use the two URLs in code like this: What this code is doing is providing a URL to the image, but instead of using some text as the label for the URL, it is using the thumbnail. It seems to be important to keep the code on one line, otherwise it doesn't work for me. And here's how it looks: Next time we'll cover how to make animated pornographic images.

After being inspired by Yeast Infection I found that it is possible to display a full-size image as a thumbnail. Personally I don't do this because the whole point of a thumbnail is to show a small version of the image without forcing the user to download the entire image. That way the user can decide if they want to click on the thumbnail and download the entire image over their pathetic 14.4 kbps dialup connection. But this way saves you the hassle of having to create and host a thumbnail image. Screw the user. Let them get DSL or a cable modem. To do this you just need your image on a web server somewhere. Most of you seem to have mastered this. I'll use as my example image this url: www.davewilson.cc/Hash/2006Hashes/Hash011806/HashMap011806.gif. Now plug your image into the following code: The width and height tags specify how big the thumbnail is. You can change these if you want to change the size of your thumbnail. And here's how it looks:
